WARNING

The Unplugged Steps should not be read in isolation and implemented one at a time.

They’re in a logical order to help chunk it down, but you should read ALL the steps, and then implement them one by one.

Reading them as a whole gives you a much better idea for what’s to come and will save you making mistakes in the earlier steps.

UNPLUGGED STEP 1:

Control the Wi-Fi

Repeat after me: ‘Without the internet, my child’s games are useless.’

Remember the Psych Science stuff at the front of the book? That was pretty important.

If I told you to just simply turn off the Wi-Fi at home as a means of encouraging a healthy Tech Diet, you might try it for a day, maybe a week, and then forget about the Unplugged Psychologist altogether (while perhaps cursing my bad advice to your partner).

This is not a hypothetical. I’ve seen this in my clinic. I spend a significant amount of time just with the parents of every family I see. It’s not because I need a break from the teenager grunting at me, it’s by design.

I’ve found that parents who understand the Psych Science are far more likely to understand why I’m asking them to implement this at home – and are far more successful at holding firm.

So, to recap if you skipped the boring science stuff: gaming without the internet provides less social interaction and less dopamine. Therefore, for most kids, it’s archaic and straight-up boring.

What do you mean ‘control’ the Wi-Fi?

Put simply, you need the ability to turn the internet or Wi-Fi connection on and off.

This will allow you to reframe THE INTERNET AS A REWARD, NOT A RIGHT.

I know this is easier said than done.

If we can reframe the internet as a reward and not a right, then it becomes every parent’s most powerful bargaining chip.
